STATEMENT

I started working on this project in early 2022. However, images of water flows powerfully filling big empty spaces have been in my dreams since I was a kid.

"An Ocean Roaming through the Forest", is an exploration of turbulence as a physical phenomenon and as a metaphor to refer to complex situations in our daily existence.

Turbulent flow is a scientific term describing the unpredictable motion of a fluid. While it can be partially measured and is found everywhere, the exact conditions that lead to its onset are not fully understood. Moreover, once turbulence emerges, its evolution becomes impossible to predict. Much of the physical world is shaped by moving flows, such as oceans, rivers, wind, and forest fires. A flow can become turbulent and behave unpredictably; however, if turbulence occurs in an environment lacking a constant source of energy, it will eventually dissipate.

Similarly, we navigate through life experiencing ups and downs. When turbulence manifests in our daily existence, life becomes an ocean upon which we can easily flounder. Turbulence can be viewed as a force of destruction, transformation, and change in the universe, but it also offers insight into our inner state of being.

"An Ocean Roaming through the Forest" invites us to look both outward, into the world, and inward, into our psyche. What is the relationship between turbulence and the everyday? Can turbulence be a force capable of completely transforming or destroying everything it touches? Are some things better understood when they are broken? Is being alive another state of turbulence?
